Whether you're an Affiliate or Fellow, our experts can help you shape the career you want - whether that's achieving the gold-standard recognition of professional registration or supporting your commitment to expertise and lifelong learning through CPD.
Professional Development
Gaining professional registration is the benchmark of excellence in the engineering industry and can give you a competitive edge in the workplace.
We can help you towards becoming an Engineering Technician (EngTech), Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng) and you’ll gain not just an internationally-recognised accreditation but access to our comprehensive resources and global network of experts.
Our Global Membership Development team supports applicants wherever they are and can advise whether your qualifications and experience are sufficient for professional registration. We also provide specialist advice for UK Armed Forces, End-Point Assessment and corporate clients.
We can guide you from application to interview and you’ll have access to free webinars, workshops and 1-2-1 sessions which are available in a range of formats, dates and times to suit your needs.
Once you’re an IMechE member, you’ll not just be part of a network setting the global engineering agenda, you’ll be supported throughout your professional development and career.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
CPD is a fundamental part of an engineer’s career and demonstrates a commitment to lifelong learning. Clients, employers and peers expect to work with engineers who are not just at the cutting edge of the industry but dedicated to learning and improving their skills.
Our membership benefits are designed to support your CPD with both structured and informal learning. Whether you volunteer, attend training or watch a webinar, it all counts.
All professionally active registered engineers are required by IMechE and the Engineering Council to undertake and record their CPD, demonstrating how they maintain and enhance their competence as a professionally registered engineer.
Mandatory recording of CPD
Failure to do so could result in sanctions being applied.

I am still in the early stages of my career, but the course has made me realise that as an engineer, you do not just focus on technical tasks. You need to understand who all the key stakeholders are and how they move from planning to execution.
Do I have more insight now? A hundred percent. I am now more organised and know who to reach. If there is a problem or I need to communicate with someone, I know exactly who that is or which department I need to contact.
TfL is a big organisation so that really helps. The company has different gates for each project, so knowing what happens at each gate has really helped me understand what we are doing on track engineering.
Non-destructive testing and coatings training
Our training schools IMechE Argyll Ruane and IMechE Fife NDT feature state-of-the-art facilities and are staffed by experienced trainers offering NDT and coatings courses and examinations, as well as Level 3 NDT consultancy services globally for individuals and organisations in key industries. Our courses meet internationally recognised certification schemes such as PCN (ISO9712), ICorr, EN4179, NAS410 and SNT-TC-1A.
Events
Our industry-leading annual events programme offers members unparalleled networking opportunities and keeps you up to date with cutting edge technical knowledge, engineering ideas, practical methods and innovations.
More than 15,000 people attend our in-person, online events and challenges every year. IMechE members are the first to hear when new events are added and can access early bird discounts.
Produced with the help of senior engineers to inform and support their industries, many are key forums throughout the year. There’s a broad range on offer, from free seminars, lectures and webinars to virtual and interactive one and two-day conferences.

Catherine Smith

My end-point assessor helped me understand the level of detail required for my forms to ensure my best chance of success.
He also made it clear that I needed to use non-industry specific terminology to ensure my assessors understood my work clearly.
My tip for anyone going through the EPA process is to not stress – there are plenty of people available that are more than willing to help, you just need to reach out to them.
