How to build a wind turbine

As the green energy revolution accelerates, hundreds of thousands of wind turbines will be built on land and offshore, providing clean, green energy for millions of homes. But have you ever wondered how they’re actually manufactured? It’s a complicated multi-step process that takes two days and involves hundreds of workers.
At LM Wind Power’s facility in the Castellon province of Spain, 600 workers make increasingly large turbine blades that are pushing towards 100m in length. This video demonstrates the process, which begins with balsa wood and glass-fibre fabric, and involves foil, resin and other advanced manufacturing techniques. But the future of this method is uncertain: there are concerns over the environmental impact of balsa wood harvesting for turbines, and, as the first generation of wind power reaches the end of its working life, some are worried about how the material from these huge machines can be recycled.
